Clean Water Infrastructure
Construction works were carried out during 2017.
The works would achieve a substantial diversion of the existing 22” and 17” cast iron mains that run the full length of Broad St, Birmingham. (Approx. 800m)
This street is well known for its night life in the City. The new tram line will run straight down the centre of it.
The size of the existing mains and the location of other utilities, negate the possibility of relaying these mains in accordance with the original proposal – outside the track line in Broad Street.
The solution would be to relay a twin 600mm and 450mm Ductile iron main off line and around busy side streets for 1.2km. The network would need to abandon the existing main in its entirety.
For this clean water infrastructure works, the sizes of the mains and their trench would pose some difficulties.
The challenges would be overcome with careful planning and good route proving.
This would need close liaison with some key stakeholders when crossing their access roads. This would include liaising with The Hyatt Hotel, City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra and Fiveways Property Management.
