Tim Harbot, West Midlands chairman of ICE, said: “All of these projects recognise that investment in infrastructure is critical for economic growth and their success relies more than ever on teams of inventive civil engineers to design, build and maintain the sophisticated environment that surrounds us.
“The ICE West Midlands Awards showcase the very best in civil engineering excellence across the region and we wish the team behind the Hinsford Close Sewer Flooding Alleviation project every success at the awards dinner.”
CPC Civils were successfully awarded the Hindsford contract in 2012 and completed works in 2013. The Hinsford Project was a major Flooding Alleviation Scheme to install a 361m3 attenuation tank underneath a public park. The tank had been pre-constructed by Carlow Precast and designed to a storm water system specification.
The public park had an invert level of approximately 5 meters below the finished ground level. CPC Civils designed and installed temporary works at the site, which included a cantilever sheet pile wall on the East side of the tank. The wall was installed to the East side due to the location of a private dwelling situated within 9 meters of the excavation site. Due to the close proximity of the house, the piles were pre-augured to minimise any vibration. Furthermore, crack monitors were placed on surrounding housing and monitored to ensure that no movement occurred during the programme.
The tank itself was installed using a 45T Crawler Crane, in precast sections onto a concrete base. Once these sections were interlocked the tank was sealed using base and wall concrete pours. Following this, a full internal benching and dry weather flow system was installed. Finally, a pre-stressed roof was constructed and installed at the site.
