Galliford Try
Flood Defence Emergancy
Following the unprecedented flooding in January & February 2014 to the southern region of the country CPC were asked to support Galliford Try to offer assistance with both flood response and flood mitigation. Examples of how these solutions could be provided and tailored to individual locations were developed, designed and suppliers located to assist.
The Environment Agency then contacted Galliford Try to request our assistance to install temporary flood defences around the village of South Hinksey in Oxfordshire. We received the go ahead from the client at 1pm on a Friday afternoon and by 2pm on the Sunday afternoon; over 900m of temporary defence had been sourced and installed.
Galliford & CPC managed the entire process and utilised the Army personnel that had been provided to install the waterproof visqueen sheeting and the sand bags. CPC Civils provided plant, equipment and materials were mobilised within a 12hr period: 2no 24ton tracked excavators, 2no 21ton wheeled excavators, 2 all terrain forklift trucks, 2no trailers, 2no 10ton dumpers, 300no 1ton bulk sand bags, 5,000no small sand bags, 250no concrete vehicle barriers (TVCB’s), 15,000m2 visqueen sheeting and 15 operatives to install the defences.
The support from the local councillors and residents was fantastic and use of the village hall was provided as a base for the operation. The children of the village also made a sign expressing their thanks for our efforts which was erected in the village hall during the works.
