Yaddlethorpe STW case study

Yaddlethorpe STW Upgrade

CPC Civils were contracted to move the point at which treated water is put back into the environment from Bottesford Beck to the larger River Trent.

Yaddlethorpe Sewage Treatment Works – Project Overview

As part of a programme of upgrades at Yaddlethorpe Sewage Treatment Works, CPC Civils would install pipework to divert processed water to a new outlet.

The installation will enable transfer of treated, recycled water to the River Trent rather than Bottesford Beck.

Yaddlethorpe Sewage Treatment Works – Construction Specifics

To complete the project CPC Civils would:

  • Install 3.7km of 900 DI pipework from Yaddlethorpe Sewage Treatment Works to an in-situ concrete outfall on the banks of River Trent.
  • Construct 600m2 piling platform spanning onto existing East Butterwick High Street for a period of 6 weeks.
  • Install 140 Nr sheet piles ranging from 17m to 9m in length. This will form temporary flood defence, structure the cofferdam and provide structural support for the base and walls.
  • Undertake the removal of circa 250m3 of existing flood defence bund and river embankment to form temporary working platforms and provide access for the construction of the structure.
  • Install 9 tonnes of reinforcement.
  • Place 144m3 of ready mixed concrete.
  • Construct 2.5m deep in-situ concrete manhole chamber (MH1) for the pipework connection from Yaddlethorpe STW and the outfall.
  • Complete installation of concrete bed and surround 900mm dia ductile iron pipework linking the outfall to MH1 on the east side of Butterwick High Street.
  • Undertake install of various metal works from access stairs to security grilles to hand-railing.
  • Cut down and remove circa 19 tonnes of redundant sheet piles.
  • Remove temporary working platform and reinstate circa 40m length of flood bund and embankment.
  • Re-seed circa 700m2 of flood bund and embankment.

Yaddlethorpe Sewage Treatment Works – Project Challenges

Successfully completing the project would require CPC Civils to overcome a number of challenges including:

  • The temporary sheet pile flood defence on the banks of River Trent being located within a small area adjacent to residential properties.
  • Needing to remove the flood bund and construct a 80m2 concrete structure adjacent to a live water course.
  • Completing works while also maintaining public access through, and maintaining health and safety in the work area.

Yaddlethorpe Sewage Treatment Works – Project Outcomes and Values

CPC Civils would begin work on this project in August 2022 and are set to complete in April 2025.

When complete the project will boost capacity and ensure that the waterway operations are in top condition.

The upgrade will also improve the condition of the Bottesford Beck which runs past the treatment works and into the Trent at East Butterwick.

Currently the processed water is pumping directly into the Bottesford Beck which is a much smaller water course. However the Bottesford Beck will radically benefit from the water discharging directly into the larger water course of the Trent.

The area is a popular spot for the general public to walk.  The upgrading of the waterways system realising a network that operates predominantly underground will improve conditions for the environment.
