Properties in the Winifred’s Drive Estate area of Donnington, Telford were experiencing internal, external and extensive highway flooding due to hydraulic incapacity. The project was promoted to try and reduce or remove the flooding issues in this area.

Due to the additional development in the catchment of the sewage, surface water and highway drainage systems which have been connected onto the upstream end of the existing systems, there is now significant hydraulic overloading.

There is a historic Mines Culverted Water Course (CWC) which flows through the estate and was reconstructed and piped during construction of the Winifred’s Drive Estate. The surface water and highway systems discharge into the Mines Culverted Water Course. There is a constant base flow from the capping of mine water, and the additional development has piped into and increased the peak storm flow rates into this system.

The solution was to provide a storm relief system in Winifred’s Drive and new connection to the SW box culvert which discharges to the Horton Channel.

Project benefits:

Mitigate the risk of flooding to all DG5 affected customers for 1:40 year level of protection.
The route is all highway or service roads, and so minimises direct impact on any customers.
Likely to provide the best future proofing of all options considered, including low maintenance requirements.
